Diarrhea, as has been said on this site, is divided into acute and chronic forms; the first recognize infectious causes: bacteria, viruses and parasites, especially in summer we mainly have bacterial forms, while in winter the viral ones. Chronic forms, on the other hand, depend on chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, stress, irritable bowel syndrome, hyperthyroidism, eosinophilic gastritis, medication, laxative abuse, diabetes medications, antihypertensives, eg. beta blockers.
Therefore it is not easy to treat the various forms of diarrhea;
the only person able to initiate the correct diagnostic
procedures is always the expert doctor.
In general, we will say, that diarrhea is responsible for the loss of liquids
and sodium, for an altered absorption of the same, mainly due to the colon.
Therefore the physician must with the diet know how to replenish these losses,
with special solutions mentioned above, based on mineral salts containing sodium,
although this may increase discharges, but will ultimately be able to correct
losses . Diarrhea can therefore become dangerous due to the related dehydration
phenomena, especially in the elderly, children and debilitated subjects.
The treatment and treatment of less severe forms of diarrhea can be carried out
at home:
1) replenish lost fluids by consuming drinks to keep the body hydrated
2) avoid foods rich in waste such as fruits and vegetables
3) avoid frozen drinks, strong tea, foods rich in fats and therefore difficult
to digest
4) limit the intake of fructose and sorbitol with the diet (fruit juices),
5) avoid alcohol, coffee and substances that can aggravate any intolerances (dairy
products, gluten excess, soy)
6) the effectiveness of lactic ferments is questioned by many; for this reason
it is recommended to discuss it in advance with your doctor
7) do not use anti-diarrheal drugs of the loperamide type: the writer has
performed a CT scan abdomen to a guy who for one month took loperamide per os
and had a paralyzed stomach, huge, which reached the umbilical cross.
Furthermore, behind a diarrhea, a right-sided colon cancer or a mucosecretory
adenoma can be hidden.
